Certa-Lok®, a Restrained Joint Pipe System for Trenchless Applications

There are various methods of installing polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipe in trenchless applications. The Certa-Lok system described in this paper, results in a fully circumferential restrained joint, which allows the pipe to be pushed or pulled. The use of a segmented pipe may be considered when jobsite staging area is limited; thereby reducing the jobsite footprint, the need for traffic control and minimizing community disruption. This is beneficial in trenchless installation by providing quick and easy pipe assembly without interrupting the pulling process during trenchless installation. The manufacturer’s recommendations for proper installation of restrained joint PVC pipe for use in water and wastewater projects will be outlined. As the PVC pipe and fittings industry grows, this material’s use continues to increase due to the numerous benefits from installation of a light weight material that is resistant to both corrosion and chemical attack. Understanding the attributes of this pipe will help the audience in future interaction with PVC products, specifically with regard to technology used for horizontal directional drilling (HDD), static pipe bursting, or as a carrier pipe through casings.
