High school graduates in Wisconsin recently took the next step toward a career in the petrochemicals industry by participating in Stateline Manufacturing Alliance (SMA)’s first ever Maintenance Apprenticeship Signing Day, hosted at Blackhawk Technical College. SMA is a Wisconsin-based organization made up of more than 40 manufacturers, including Westlake Pipe & Fittings, that aims to “serve as a regional catalyst for talent recruitment and development in the fields of advanced manufacturing through collective efforts, initiatives and partnerships,” according to its website.

Representatives from Westlake Pipe & Fittings’ Janesville, Wisconsin site were present at the signing day to welcome the company’s newest additions to the maintenance apprenticeship program. Westlake’s maintenance apprenticeship follows an “earn and learn” model, which allows students to work full-time learning a trade while also being reimbursed for taking college courses that are part of the program.

“High school outreach is a continued focus as we recognize the need for students to choose technical trades as a career with the ever-increasing skills gap shortage,” said Nicole Larson, Human Resources Business Partner at the Janesville site.  “It was so awesome to celebrate with the students and see their smiling faces as they were recognized with their families and supporting employers present.”
